Buyer's Guide
BUYING PROCEDURE To be able to purchase at Durban Fresh Produce Market, a buyer has to apply for a personalized buying card to be utilized for all purchases at the market. Should a buyer not have an ID book on the day they wish to buy, the market will issue a temporary card effective for that day only. How to apply for a personalized buyer’s card?
Collect a buyer card application form at our customer information desk in our Sales Hall outside the cashiers or download the application form below
Complete the application form in full, sign it and hand in together with a certified copy of your Identity Document and proof of residential address. In the case of a business buyer’s card, a copy of business registration documents is required.
Your card will be available for collection within 2 working days. Collect your buyer’s card with you unique buyer account number from Enquiries counter at the Market Cashiers.
Depositing money into your buyer account
Cash can be deposited at the Market Cashiers.
Electronic direct depositing facility located at the cashiering complex.
Process an Electronic Fund Transfer to the market’s bank account below and include your buyer card number as reference.
Cash deposits can be done at any Nedbank branch, the details are as follows:

HOW TO BUY?
Choose the produce and quantity that you want to purchase from any of our six market agents.
Approach a salesperson with your request, you will then be handed a docket with your request printed on it.
Hand this docket together with your buying card to the official at the computer terminal on the sales floor where you selected your produce.
Your sale will be processed and you will be issued with a produce removal note with your name printed on it. The produce removal note will allow you to remove produce from market agents’ sales floors and sales halls.
After each purchase your account will be automatically updated. The new balance is reflected on your docket/removal note, which you will receive after each purchase.
When you are finished buying you can leave the balance of your money in the account or you may withdraw it.
Withdrawals can only be processed by the account holder subject to producing an Identity Document.
LOST / STOLEN CARDS
Report lost or stolen cards immediately to the Customer Information Desk in the Sales Hall or to the Market Cashiers or you may call 031-311 5100.
Replacement fees are applicable for all lost, stolen or damaged cards.
PRODUCERS/SUPPLIERS GUIDE Durban Fresh Produce Market functions as a commission market and welcomes all fresh produce farmers/suppliers to market their produce through one or more of our five market agents. Market agents sell produce on behalf of farmers and suppliers and receive a mutually negotiated commission.
Commission Market System
As with all national bulk fresh produce markets, Durban Market operate essentially on a commission-based system where the market’s agents and the market (eThekwini Municipality) receive a commission from producers for their services offered.
Market Agents who are appointed by the Head of Markets, are allocated floor space on the market to sell produce on behalf of the producers/suppliers.
Produce consigned to a market agent remains the property of the producer/supplier until it is sold. Once sold, ownership is transferred from producer to buyer.
Market Agents receive a pre-determined commission which is negotiated between the market agent and producer/supplier, for services rendered.
Durban Fresh Produce Market receives a fixed commission of 5% on sales.
This air-conditioned sales hall is dedicated to trading of vegetables, tomatoes and fruit. There are six market agents with experienced sales people who assist buyers on the sales floors. There are cold rooms erected on each market agent’s sales floors to maintain the cold chain.
SALES HALL 2 : 12,000m2
This sales hall is dedicated to trading of potatoes, onions, garlic and ginger. The same six market agents located in sales hall 1 trade on sales hall 2.
BULK COLD STORAGE ROOMS

The state-of-the-art cold rooms are provided for use by farmers (priority) via their designated market agent and by other market users (when space allows). Large volume of produce is stored seasonally to cater for the needs of buyers throughout the year. There are set tariffs for the use of these rooms and they are reviewed once a year in July. The users of these rooms are charged per day per pallet.
COLD ROOMS ON THE SALES FLOOR

These are additional rooms that are erected on each market agent’s sales floor area in sales hall 1 to maintain the cold chain and to allow buyers to access fresh produce quicker. Market agents pay monthly rental for the use of these rooms.
Ripening rooms are provided for the purpose of ripening fruit, particularly bananas. They are provided to be utilized by farmers but are also available to market buyers when space allows. The rooms function as multi-purpose rooms meaning they can be converted to cold rooms if need be. The rooms are constantly monitored via a 24hour temperature monitoring system whereby market staff are alerted by an alarm system to extreme temperature fluctuations. The users of these rooms are charged per day per pallet.
This facility is provided for small scale farmers whereby the farmer rents trading space for display and selling purposes. There is no commission levied and there are no market agents at farmers market as farmers are required to sell their own produce. The farmers apply for a trading permit and only start trading after a permit has been issued.
