The French Institute Of South Africa (IFAS) And The French Embassy In South Africa Presents Independent Films And Projects
The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the French Embassy in South Africa are proud to announce their participation in this year's Durban International Film Festival (19 – 29 July) and the Durban FilmMart (19-22 July).

At the Durban International Film Festival, IFAS and the French Embassy in South Africa will be supporting the strong French line-up in the feature film official competition and at the Durban FilmMart in partnership with DFM and Produire au Sud (Festival des 3 Continents, Nantes, France), and they will continue their collaboration on the strong programme for scenario development and international networks called The Script Studio.

Independent French Movie selection
  • « Les Miserables » by Ladj Ly – Award Jury Cannes 2019 - Docu-fiction / drama
    A sensation at Cannes this year, winning the Jury Award, Ladj Ly’s docu-fiction/drama, Les Misérables will have its South Africam premiere at the DIFF. This is Ladj Ly’s first feature film. after making several web-documentaries about riots and conflict places (as 365 days in Clichy-Montfermeil and 365 Days in Mali). Les Miserables  will be released in South African cinemas in early 2020 by Videovision Entertainment.

  • “Fornacis” by Aurélia Mengin - Genre film / fantastic / LGBTQ+

Fornacis is 100% independent and the first movie ever produced by a women director from La Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean. Aurélia Mengin, who is both director and lead actress of this genre film will be in attendance at the DIFF.

The Script Studio: Writing workshops in partnership with Produire au Sud (Festival des 3 Continents)
Once again, IFAS supports the successful partnership between DFM and Produire au Sud. For the next three years, they will share a programme for scenario-development and international networks called The Script Studio. This is a partnership between both festivals provides two different exchanges, which take place in Durban and in Nantes.

For Durban “Jumpstart”, is an incubator programme for four pre-selected emerging directors from the KwaZulu-Natal region to introduce them to project-packaging for the international market. Consultants will introduce these directors to important techniques and tools surrounding scriptwriting and storytelling.

In addition, one film project from the Durban FilmMart will be selected to pitch at the Produire au Sud workshop in Nantes, France in November 2019.
